Greetings

Lighting of Advent Candle

Leader:  You know what time it is:

People:  Alarms sound and rouse us from our slumber.

Leader:  Sirens wail and alert us to danger.

People:  But about that day and hour no one knows: the end is coming.  We must wake up!

Leader:  War in Ukraine, political strife in the United States, domestic violence in families; we long for peace and wholeness.

People:  Grant us peace, O God.

Leader:  On this first Sunday of Advent we light one candle for peace

People:  Let the light of peace glow within us.

(Sing Dona Nobis Pacem while the first candle is lit)

Song Dona Nobis Pacem

Opening Prayer

God of Peace,

we live in a world where nations rise up against nations and we invest many resources in learning war.  Our communities fight over issues from taxes to tolls, neighbors contend with each other and families argue at the dinner table.  Forgive our contention and teach us instead the things that make for peace: forgiveness, cooperation, and compromise.  Show us how to turn our weapons of war into tools for life.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Doxology How Great is Our God

Isaiah 2:1-5

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!
