Greetings

Lighting of Advent Candle

Leader:  You know what time it is!

People:  To all God’s beloved, called to be saints, around the world.

Leader:  Grace to you and peace from God our Creator and the Lord Jesus Christ.

People:  Peace, it seems, is a distant dream.  Lives are lost in far away lands and in our own city streets.  We know no peace.

Leader:  You are set apart for the gospel of God, promised long beforehand through the prophets in the holy scriptures.

People:  Grant us peace, O God.

Leader:  On the fourth Sunday of Advent, we light four candles for peace.

People:  Let the light of your peace begin in us.

(Sing Dona Nobis Pacem, while 3 blue and 1 pink candles are lit)

Opening Prayer

Immanuel, God With Us, we walk in the darkness, uncertain of the way forward.  We fumble through life, not sure where you are or what you want us to do.  We long for a sign from you and yet hesitate to ask.  Often, we fail to notice the signs you send us which tell us how much you love us and are present with us.  Forgive our stubbornness and reassure our fearfulness.  Remind us again that you are with us.  Amen.

Doxology How great is our God

Reading from the Hebrew Bible

Isaiah 7:10-16

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

Joy to the world V1

Prayer Blessed God, from Angels to Zeal we rejoice in the gift of Christmas; you are indeed the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, our A to Z.  Thank you for coming among us as one of us, for the song of the angels and the love of the shepherds, for the gifts of the magi and the faith of Mary and Joseph.  Put the angel’s song on our lips and the shepherd’s love in our hearts, receive our gifts and fill us with faith.  In the name of the Christ Child, we pray. Amen.

Joy to the world v2-4

Benediction

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
