Call to Worship

Worship Assistant:  The heavens are telling the glory of God.

People:  The firmament proclaims God’s handiwork.

Worship Assistant:  Day to day pours forth speech.

People:  And night to night declares knowledge.

Opening Prayer

Great Creator, you fashioned the earth and set the skies ablaze with your glory. You formed humans in your image and charged us to keep the earth.  We confess that we have failed you. We have used your gift of creation rather than tending it; we have despoiled the blessings of the earth and sent fumes into the heavens. We have littered not only the earth, but the seas and even outer space.

Forgive us, O God, and teach us again how to care for the cosmos in which you have placed us.  We repent of our abuse and commit ourselves to work with you to bring a new creation.  Send your Spirit to hover again over the waters of creation to bring life anew.  Amen.

Old Testament

Leviticus 25:1-7

The Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying: Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: When you enter the land that I am giving you, the land shall observe a sabbath for the Lord. Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in their yield; but in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of complete rest for the land, a sabbath for the Lord: you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. You shall not reap the aftergrowth of your harvest or gather the grapes of your unpruned vine: it shall be a year of complete rest for the land. You may eat what the land yields during its sabbath—you, your male and female slaves, your hired and your bound laborers who live with you; for your livestock also, and for the wild animals in your land all its yield shall be for food.

New Testament

Matthew 6:25-33

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

that the earth and all its fullness is yours,
