Greeting

Call to Worship (Worship Assistant)

Worship Leader:  Are any among you suffering?

People:  In my distress, I cried to the Lord.

Worship Leader:  Are any among you cheerful?

People:  In my joy, I prayed the to the Lord.

Worship Leader:  Are any among you sick?

People:  Let us pray for those diseased in body and spirit.

Worship Leader:  Are any among you guilty?

People:  Let us confess our sin that God may cleanse us.

Opening Prayer (Worship Assistant)

Good and Gracious God, you speak to us in the silence of the night and the clamor of the day, you call to us before we even recognize you are there.  We confess that we fail to hear your voice and recognize your presence.  We become so caught up in our own troubles, so enamored of our joys, and we forget to turn to you.  Forgive our distractions and self-occupation.

Heal us from our illnesses and cure our warring ways.  Cleanse us from all iniquity and put a new and right spirit within us.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior, Amen.

Blessing of Purple Caps

Gracious God, you knit each of us together in our mother’s wombs at the start of our lives.  Today we offer up to you these purple caps, knitted and crocheted with love by artists in our church.  The purple reminds us of purple faces of fussy babies and the frustrations of those who care for them.  May these purple caps remind all caregivers to never shake babies.  Bless the caps and the message they send; bless parents and other caregivers, fill them with your patience and energy even in the long hours of tending little children.  Of God, you came among us as a little child and today we pray for infants and young children.  May they grow in wisdom and stature.  Help us to recognize your presence among us in them still today.  Amen.

Reading from the New Testament

James 5:13-

“Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.”

Mark 9:38-41

38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

The Message     The Prayers of the Righteous

Prayer After Message

Blessed God, you hear us when we pray and you hear us when we reach out in mercy.  You speak to us as we gather to worship and   you speak to us when we go forth to serve.  Grant that our prayers each day may move us to lives of caring and that knowing your grace may lead us to be your grace in the world.  Amen.

Closing Song    Sweet Hour of Prayer #496
