Call to Worship

Worship Leader:  Where shall we go to follow God’s will for us?

People:  Good Lord, show us the way

Worship Leader:  To whom shall we proclaim this good news?

People:  Good Lord, show us the way.

Worship Leader:  How do we find our way when obstacles appear before us?

People:  Good Lord, show us the way.

Opening Prayer

Gracious God, we set out plans in which we intend to carry out your will and obstacles block our way; we go into the world to spread your good news and find one barrier after another.  Grant us your wisdom that we may know when you are actually calling us in a new different direction, and when it is we need to rely on your grace to have the strength to persist and continue in spite of the obstacles.  We ask this in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

New Testament

Acts 16:11-15

We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A certain woman named Lydia, a worshipper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, ‘If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home.’ And she prevailed upon us.

Message: The River in Philippi: Studying About That Good Old Way

Sacrament of Baptism and Reception into Membership

Pastor:  Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include these persons now before you in your care?

Congregational Response:  With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ.  We will surround these persons with a community of love and forgiveness that they may grow in their trust of God, and be found faithful in their service to others.  We will pray for them that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.

Apostles Creed
Pastor:  Let us join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.

Do you believe in God the Father?

People:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Pastor:  Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

People:  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor:  Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

People:  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sin, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Congregational Response:

Through baptism you are incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God’s new creation and made to share in Christ’s royal priesthood.

We are all one in Jesus Christ.

With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you as members of the family of Christ.

Commendation and Welcome

Pastor: Members of the household of God, I commend these persons to your love and care.  Do all in your power to increase their faith, confirm their hope, and perfect them in love.

People: We give thanks for all that God has already given you and we welcome you in Christian love.

As members together with you in the body of Christ and in this congregation of The United Methodist Church, we renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service, that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.
