Prelude
Worship Assistant: O, that I knew where I might find you, God!
People: Are you in the howling of the wind and the tumult of the sea?
Worship Assistant: O, that I knew where I might find you, God.
People: Are you in the fury of the fire burning through the forest?
Worship Assistant: O, that I knew where I might find you, God!
People: Are you in the sound of sheer silence?
Opening Prayer (Worship Assistant)
Holy One, we search for you. We turn to the right and the left, to the north and the south, and find you not. Storms and tumult come into our lives and you are nowhere to be found. Illness and injury plague us and no matter how much we cry out, you remain silent. Where are you, God? Who are you, God? Why do you give us the silent treatment when we so need to hear your voice?
Help us to find you in the silence.
Amen.

Reading from the Old Testament
Job 23:1-9. 16-17
Then Job answered:
2 ‘Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning.
3 O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling!
4 I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me.
6 Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me.
7 There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever by my judge.
8 ‘If I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him;9 on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him.
16God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; 17If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face!
The Message The Silent Treatment
Prayer
Grant us such faith, O God, to hear you in the silence and see you in your absence.
We believe, God. Help our unbelief.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
