People: But a true friend sticks closer than one’s nearest kin.
Worship Assistant: I do not call you servants any longer, said Jesus.
People: But I have called you friends.
Opening Prayer
Thank you, God, for friends. For those who help us with life’s challenges and chores.
For those with whom we know pleasure and play and for those who love us simply for
the sake of friendship. Help us to be friends to those we meet. In the name of Jesus,
our Friend we pray, Amen.

Pastor: Today we lament the gun violence which plagues our nation.
People: Peace, peace, we pray, when there is no peace.
Pastor: May 24, nineteen children and two teachers massacred in Uvalde, Texas.
People: Peace, peace, we pray, when there is no peace.
Pastor: May 21, two people shot and killed in Goshen, Illinois
People: Peace, Peace, we pray, when there is no peace.
Pastor: May 15, two people shot and killed in Chicago, Illinois.
People: Peace, peace, we pray when there is no peace.
Pastor: May 15, two people shot and killed in Houston, Texas
People: Peace, peace, we pray when there is no peace.
Pastor: May 14, ten people massacred in Buffalo, New York.

Pastor: Let us offer thoughts and prayers for victims of gun violence; those killed in
mass shootings and those who die by suicide, domestic violence and turf battles
between gangs.
People: I hate and despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn
assemblies.
Pastor: Grant, O God, that our thoughts and prayers translate to action
People: Take away from me the noise of your songs.
Pastor: Transform our moments of silence into roars of anger. I invite you now to
express your frustration, anger, and grief in whatever form is right for you.

Old Testament
I Samuel 18:1-5
When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul
of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him that day and would not
let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David,
because he loved him as his own soul. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he
was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and
his belt. David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him; as a result, Saul
set him over the army. And all the people, even the servants of Saul, approved.
New Testament
John 15:12-17
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has
greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you
do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant
does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have
made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose
me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that
the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these
commands so that you may love one another.

Jesus our Friend; you laid down your life for us, to show us the depth of God’s love for
us. Shape us in your love that we might give our lives for you and for the friends with
whom you have blessed us. Amen.
