Greeting

Call to worship

Worship Assistant:  It is too little a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob:

People:  I will give you as a light to the nations.

Worship Assistant:  I have given you as a covenant to the people

People; A light to the nations.

Worship:  Let your light so shine before all that they may see your good works and give glory to God.

People:  This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!

.

Opening Prayer

God who separated the darkness from the light. In darkness the seed sprouts and life grows.

In darkness you called Abram to count the stars in the sky and know your love was even deeper;

In darkness the angels announced the good news of Jesus to the shepherds and the Magi sought their way to adore him.

God who said, “let there be light” and there was light.  You called the people of Israel to be a light to the nations and Jesus said to let our light shine.

Teach us to embrace the darkness and to walk in the light, to treasure mystery and rejoice in learning new truths. Lead us to be both children of darkness and children of light.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reading from the Hebrew Bible

Scripture

Isaiah 49:1-7

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.” And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength— he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Sermon: Servants of Light

Prayer: Holy One, open our hearts that we might welcome and embrace all your children; open our minds that we might learn from those we have yet to meet; open our doors that we might invite in those who had been cast out.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Song  We Shall Overcome #533

Benediction: Bear witness to the love of God in this world so that those to whom love is a stranger will find in you generous friends.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ

and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.  Amen.
