Call to Worship

Worship Assistant:  Blessed are you!

People:  Rejoice and be glad!

Worship Assistant:  Blessed are you! Holy are you!

People:  Yours is the kin-dom of God.

Opening Prayer

Our God, you call us into a life which turns the world’s values upside down and inside out.  We confess that we cling to our earthly treasures and hold fast to that which lifts us up in the eyes of the world.  Transform us by the renewing of our minds that we may not conform to the world, lead us to your righteousness.

We pray this in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Teacher’s Blessing

Introduction by Pastor

Prayer:

Eternal God, you have entrusted us with the message of your power, grace, justice, and love.

Provide for us your guidance, that we may be teachers and learners together.

Believing that you are in our midst, we set apart those who would serve in our Christian education classes.

May they serve you in nurturing the spiritual growth of all who are entrusted in their care.

Bless each one gathered before us, enabling them to be channels of your grace.  We pray through Jesus Christ our Savior.  Amen.

Scripture

Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Prayer

God of our blessings, we thank you for turning our world upside down so that the meek and merciful are more blessed than the bold and belligerent.  Grant that your blessings will transform our hearts to become blessings to all we meet.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
