Opening Prayer

Almighty God, through your only Son  you overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life.  Grant that we who celebrate our Lord’s resurrection, by the renewing of your Spirit, arise from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Scripture

Mark 16:1-8

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Sermon                                 The Silence of Easter

Silence

Prayer

Risen One, at the empty tomb we find ourselves struck with fear and amazement.  Words fail us for what can we say in the face of life when death has devastated us; what can we say when wonder overpowers explanation.

Risen One, at the empty tomb we are silent.  We come to you stunned at what you have done and what you still do.  Receive our silence this Easter morning and know we are yours.  Amen.

Congregational Response

With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ.  We will surround this person with a community of love and forgiveness, that she may grow in her trust of God, and be found faithful in her service to others.  We will pray for her, that she may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life.

Pastor:  Let us join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.

Do you believe in God the Father?

People:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth

Pastor:  Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

People:  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor:  Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Thanksgiving over the water

Pastor:  Pour out your Holy Spirit, to bless this gift of water and those who receive it, to wash away their sin and clothe them in righteousness throughout their lives, that dying and being raised with Christ, they may share in his final victory.

People:  All praise to you, Eternal Father, that through your Son Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns forever.  Amen.

Baptism with Laying on of Hands

Congregational Response:  Through baptism you are incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God’s new creation and made to share in Christ’s royal priesthood.  We are all one in Christ Jesus.  With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you as a member of the family of Christ.

Commendation and Welcome

Pastor:  Members of the household of God, I commend these persons to your love and care.  Do all in your power to increase their faith, confirm their hope, and perfect them in love.

People:  We give thanks for all that God has already given you and we welcome you in Christian love.  As members together with you in the body of Christ and in this congregation of the United Methodist Church, renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service, that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

Benediction

We are sent forth in the power of Christ’s resurrection.  Alleluia!

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
