Greeting

Call to Worship

Lighting of Advent Candle

Leader:  The Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captives.

People:  Though we carry heavy burdens and our hearts are broken, the joy of the Lord is our strength.

Leader:  The Lord has sent me to comfort all who mourn, to give them the oil of gladness instead of mourning.

People:  As tears fall from our eyes and sadness fills our lives, the joy of the Lord will be our strength.

Leader:  Today we light three Advent candles that joy comes with the dawn.

People:  The joy of the Lord is our strength.

(Two blue and one pink Advent candles are lit as the congregation sings The Joy of the Lord is My Strength)

Opening Prayer

In this season of joy, Blessed One, some of us come with heavy hearts.  We mourn and do not feel blessed; We hurt and long for relief;

We listen to news of war, devastation and despair that peace can ever come.

In this season of joy, we offer to you our sorrow and grief, and rest assured that you are present with us even there, especially there.  Amen.

Scripture

Isaiah 61:1-4

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.

They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

I Thessalonians 5:16-24

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.

May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

Hymn                                     O Come, O Come, Emmanuel #211 with call and response

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel #211, stanzas 1-4 with antiphons between verses:

Antiphon 1:  pastor:  O EMMANUEL, our Ruler and Lawgiver, the Expected of the nations and their Savior:

People:  Come and save us, O Lord, Our God.

Antiphon 2: Pastor:  O WISDOM, who came forth from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end, and ordering all things mightily and sweetly.

People:  Come and teach us the way of prudence.

Antiphon 3: Pastor:  O ADONAI and Leader of the house of Israel, who appeared to Moses in the flames of the bush and gave him the law on Sinai:

People:  come, and with your outstretched arms redeem us.

Antiphon 4: Pastor:  O ROOT OF JESSE, who stands for an ensign of the people, before whom kings shall keep silence and to whom the Gentiles shall make their supplication:

People:  Come and deliver us and tarry not.
