You are invited to participate in our study! Philip Yancey’s book, The Bible Jesus Read, is not an in-depth analytical Bible study. Instead, it is his thoughts as he reads the Bible interacting with the content, as he encourages us to do. In Chapter 1, he takes a broad look at the Old Testament and then selects a Book from each of the sections of history, prophets, poetry, and wisdom literature. There is much we find difficult to comprehend in the Old Testament (violence, vengeance, slavery for example), but Yancey tells us God had to work with people’s moral condition at its given stage. In these stories we begin to find the seeds of God’s grace. Speaking in language the Biblical people understood, God gradually edged his people toward a different way. Yancey suggests that we come to the Bible, asking questions, accepting that it will make us uncomfortable, as we come to terms with what it means for us personally.
Nourishing our Faith meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. We will begin our study of this book, Wednesday, January 13, 10 a.m. via Zoom. Our study will probably take us into April. For an invitation, please contact Melody, melody.mello@comcast.net. Please purchase a copy of the book (paperback or e-format) and read Chapter 1 for our first class. There is also a participant guide which you may choose to order to deepen your own understanding, but it is not necessary for the class discussions.
